The 55 VAC "problem" exists with virtually every "boat
anchor". The "cure" for it is to replace the power
cord with a 3-wire cord hooking the "green" wire to
the chassis.
Remember that the old receivers were manufactured to
have an external ground connected to them before they
were plugged into the AC outlet.
By installing a 3-wire cord (which should be done on
every boat anchor including going to the cabinet on
the "hot chassis" types instead of the chassis itself
for safety reasons) the 55 VAC (or more likely 60 to
65 VAC in most situations these days) is connected to
"ground" by your AC wiring. This is usually caused by
the bypass capacitors that go from each side of the AC
line to the chassis. Replace the capacitors with
quality modern types and put on a 3-wire cord. Your
"AC problems" will disappear!
