      I can't hear what it is doing, but I'd bet that you 455 crystal in 
the filter is off freq.  You've aligned
the radio to a different freq than that crystal is (1/2 to 1 khz) and 
that's where your trouble is.
What you usually need to do here is to put the sig gen through the filter 
itself and tune the generator for the
loudest signal.  When you find that, you've also found the freq that you'll 
need to align the rest of the IF strip to.
That will center the filter in the IF and then you get BOTH side band and 
not just one.  Don't forget, too,
that when you go from USB to LSB, you have to change the BFO freq to the 
other side as well so you're
getting the right mixing product for detection.
