The HQ-110 or HQ-100 has a much wider bandwidth than the 180
because of the
it doesn't have the third IF bandwidth limiting and filtering. Now, you
should still be able to get
fairly decent audio off of the 180, provided that it's aligned properly and
the paper caps in the third IF
haven't gone sour. You also have a different audio amp and curve in the
180 verses the 100/110.
If you get the audio off of the detector, before it goes through the 1st
audio amp, that should improve things
a lot. You may also need to align the receiver. That muddy sound usually
means that the third IF is off
and it many times sounds better in the 2kc wide position rather than the 3
kc position. If that's the case,
it needs caps and an alignment. If you don't have a decent generator,
don't go there, as you'll make it worse
not better. I just finished a 180 for a customer and it sounds very nice
on the AM band with the old big band music.

Thanks!!
