Hello Gene. I'm not the one who has the problem. I was replying to Gary
about his HQ170 restoration project. A weird problem as tube-type radios
aren't capable of generating 15khz birdies across only one band. (Or at
least you would think.) There must be something generating RF near his
location. Anyway, your right on the money about scanners. I have two Radio
Shack models...one uses crystals and the other is a 60 channel programable.
When both are on at the same time, they lock each other up. Then there's my
computer which spews out garbage all over the HF bands. And there's
powerline hash which the local utility could care less about. Around 30
years ago, my grandfather (WB9SAP) had horrible powerline noise. He couldn't
hear anything. The light company sent someone out who found a faulty ground
connection at a light pole six blocks away. End of noise. Today, the light
company would rather send you off to the nuthouse than fix their ailing
infrastucture. I suppose that DX'ing powerline RFI could be a hobby, but I
don't think it would be very entertaining. Another note...I've never been
able to pick up Duane Fischer's signal on either of my Hammarlunds here in
central Illinois, but I ran across a web site that claims to broadcast his
weekend nets. It's in the file somewhere. I'll post it later. Hope Gary will
keep us posted on his HQ170 project. 73's Mike
