Hi.
Right now I'm listening to RNZI, 17675KHz on that Hammarlund SP-600 JX17
that I'm in the process of electrically overhauling. They're playing some
old music and it sure sounds nice! NOTHING tunes like a well serviced SP600
8^)
Amazingly enough, after replacing a bunch of capacitors, some weak and
missing tubes, cleaning everything etc the dial is off less than 100KHz (1
dial division)at 17.675KHz. And it's probably been many years since this
behemoth has been aligned, or even powered up since it arrived dirty,
missing some tubes and with all the wires to the panel switches cut pending
replacement of same. Just goes to show that a 50 year old radio can come
back from the grave <grin>.
Now that I'm at full rated Voltage the sensitivity and gain seem to be just
about where they should be, the "S" meter is working now (dirty S/AF meter
switch) tomorrow I'll give it a final "going through" before doing the
"first" alignment. When I work on a receiver I usually run it several
hours, do a preliminary alignment then play it several hours or a couple
days more and re-align it again. At that point they usually "stay put".
Just one problem left. The VR tube (0A2) isn't glowing. It has sufficient
Voltage to "fire", it just won't do it. A friend is bringing one by
tomorrow. I very rarely see a VR tube that is totally "dead".
