Without the tar, are the windings held firmly in place, or are they free to 
move around a bit inside the casing?  In my SP-600, I once had a near disaster 
operating the set while it was turned upside down -- suddenly a lot of heat 
and smoke from the power supply, and the rectifier tube was ruined.  It worked 
OK when I replaced the tube and turned the unit upright.  I suspect that the 
coil in one of the filter chokes shorted against the case when I turned the set 
over.
