Hi Phil,
Don't forget to look for BBoD's - unless you get lucky with a late serial
number it will not have disc ceramics from the factory. All Black Beauties
of Death must go, although it's a bit of a pain to do on this receiver.
Whilst inside the turret and guts check all the spring contacts for
cracked/broken/bent ones. My semi-mint JX-17 (luckily all factory disc
ceramics) also has the IF gain control mod, done, I believe, as an
officially sanctioned mod while it was still on active duty in the Army.
It's a common mod for this model, I suppose to allow balancing gains when
used in a diversity setup. I've never made use of the control in
single-receiver operation, simply leaving it wide open all the time.
