[Hammarlund] Dumb tuning question

Mike -- congratulations on owning one of the
top receivers of all time. I have owned HQ180s
since I started in SWL in the 1960s -- in fact, I still
have three of them.

Here's the bottom line -- the only sure fire way
to use a 180, and get to know what's left of the
broadcasts on the SW bands, is to tune often, and
familiarize where the stations are at all hours of
the day. Unless you get a digital readout that can
work with the 180 (and they are available), you
will have to just allow the radio to kind of "map"
your way through the bands. The bandspread
on the 180's is good, but won't necessarily instantly
let you know what you're tuning. If you use the
bandspread knob between 100 khz segments,
then it might do you some good. Leave the band
spread on 100, preferably at a crystal calibrator
point (9.500) then tune down with the bandspread.
You will in time get to know what's there (Cairo 9475,
Turkey 9460, Greece 9420, etc etc)

One of the great features of the 180 is the vernier
tuning control which allows fine tuning + or - 3 khz
combined with the excellent notch and many selectivity
options. You can use all selectivity positions in either
regular AM or in SSB mode.

Enjoy
