Please don't relay stories like this while I'm at work - it makes me want to go
home and play!
Sounds like a nice rig, knowing how nice the SX-28A and SX-62B sound. If it tops
that, it must be pretty spectacular. I'd be curious to hear how he's redesigned
the audio section over stock. No, I don't want to modify mine(I could never
aspire to such heights anyhow), but it would be interesting to know. It's
amusing to me though, how many of us are against modifying this old gear, but
would love to own such a piece of radio history. Perhaps it's the fact that the
radios were so much more plentiful back then or just the oddity involved. For
me, it would definitely be the thrill of using a radio created by a 'master'
instead of just hacked by Joe Ham. Regardless of what a purist might think of
Mr. Leary's creations, from all I've read he seems to have been a very
interesting and knowledgeable guy who embodied the actual spirit of 'radio' in
his work.
As far as dating yourself with the Big Band music, we already knew you were
older 'n dirt. Besides, that great music has been making a comeback over the
last decade(not that it ever went away), so it's not that clear of an indicator
of age as it was 20 years ago. There's a station down in Massachusetts will a
call of WCRN at 830 on the AM dial. Plays all Big Band, Sinatra, etc. I listen
to it most weekends on the SX-62B, sometimes the SX-28A. I got to see Stan
Kenton and Woody Herman when I was in high school back in the 70s, never looked
back after that. Still like a lot of other types of music as well, but there's
nothing like the fullness and timing of Big Band...
Hmmm....I've been out of town for a few days and just got back today....wonder
if the boss would notice if I went home and played radio?
