[Hammarlund] How to clean up tube shields?

I have two types of tube shields in several of 
the radios I'm rehabing.  One type is aluminum and
cleans up fine with aluminum polish.  The other 
type are badly corroded and don't respond to aluminum 
polish or anything else I've tried.  What's the magic 
chemical and what are they made out of?
