Hi Loren...I have two cheap signal generators. One is an old Knight-kit and
the other is a Heathkit. They're not fancy but they get the job done.
There's also a lot of old Eico generators out there. All of these can be had
for next to nothing. I know some folks like to spend zillions on a signal
generator and that's fine for them. I wouldn't bother. For 60khz IF
alingnment on double or triple conversion radios, you'll need a decent grade
generator that goes that low in frequency, which mine don't. But if all you
need is 455khz, that's simple. Use a working radio and set it to 910khz.
Tune the generator to around 455khz and zereobeat the second harmonic to the
station on the 910khz frequency. If there's no station there in your area
then do it at night when the skip is in. You'll be right on the money and
can do your If alignment on the receiver undergoing surgery. Just a trick I
learned somewhere long ago which is much better than assuming that the
generator's dial markings are correct. (They rarely are). Happy
