Michael,
Before going to "additives", do a complete check on the mechanicals per the
manual. The manual should go into good detail on the string installation. Does the
string route properly and do the right number of wraps around the pulleys? Unless
something was modified (mangled) by a Previous Owner or there's too much friction
somewhere, it should work. If the string was chemically treated by a PO, it may be a
lost cause. In that case, you'll probably have to restring. You might try a little rosin
like the kind used for violin bows. I think GC Electronics sold something similar. I
don't think beeswax would help at all.
I just finished restringing a National NC-98 that was quite a sight. A PO had
restrung with extra pulleys & rollers fabricated from curtain rod parts. I couldn't
believe my eyes and surprise - it didn't work right. I tore it all apart and restored it to
original and it now works great. When the manual says the string needs to be x
inches long from point A to point B, they aren't kidding. A little shorter and it won't
reach. A little longer and it will slip. Oh, avoid the temptation to "roughen up" the
surface of the drive shaft. You'll just wear out the dial cord.
Good luck,
Ken
