No, it's not normal.
You can get the manual free from Ken grimm's great site, BAMA:
http://bama.sbc.edu/
Go to the Hammarlund section, HQ-180, and get the one in the "series"
folder. It'll cover all the 180's. Also get the notes in the 170 section,
abt 4 pgs, by Frank Lester, Hammarlund Sales Mgr. They cover several
things such as hum, hum modulation, xtal calibrator level, etc, much of
which that will also apply to early 180's.
I'd suggest cleaning tube pins for the oscillators and mixers as a
possible source of your problem, also the wipers on the main & bs tuning
caps. Someone else may have a more direct solution for your problem.
The 180 is a terrific receiver. It may need a little attention
initially, but you'll be happy with it, I'm sure. if not, there are plenty
of folks who would be happy to have it ;-)
