THAT FINAL ITEM: CELL PHONE RELIABILITY

And finally this week, a graphic example of how the cellular telephone
network can hiccup at the most inopportune time. Earlier in this
newscast, we talked to Andrew Young, N8ARY, up in Grand Haven Michigan.
Andrew was using a cellular phone. One of the topics that he and our
Producer Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF, were discussing was the reliability of
these devices. Guess what happened next:

--
Pasternak: "It seems to me that more and more hams are carrying
cellphones than HT's. Have you noticed that also?

Young: "Yes. Myself, I have a cellphone that rarely works when there
is a busy time -- like during some sort of event. When a lot of people
get in one area my cellphone almost never works and usually I have
t...."

Phone line sound: "click. click."

Pasternak. Hello.... Hello.... I think your cellphone stopped
working."
--

Talk about a graphic example happening at the most convenient time.
Thats right. The cellular phone system up in Michigan did what so many
seem to do. It abruptly went away.

Ham radio is always there when you need it. Another good reason to
always carry your H-T when you are out and about. (ARNewsline)

No before we go, a special word of congratulations to Amateur Radio
Newsline reporter Cathy Anno, KB0FDU. This on the birth of her third
child -- a boy named Conner William Anno born on Friday August 23rd.
Little Conner weighed in at just over 6 pounds and was 19 1/2 inches
long. Cathy describes her new son as being -- and we quote -- "just
perfect." And less we forget, Cathy, her husband Darren and little
Conner are all doing just fine.

For now, with Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF, at the editors desk, I'm Norm
Seely, KI7UP, saying 73, and we thank you for listening." Amateur Radio
