This morning I realized my OS X hourly clock chime was being transmitted
by fldigi. On the hour I could hear the chime in the TS-590's TX- Monitor and
see the signal on the S-Meter. I like the chime and would like for it to play
via the iMac OS X Internal Speakers but do not want it to go out via the USB
Audio CODEC port for fldigi to transmit.
It was easy to ditch the special hourly chime by unchecking the "Chime
on the Hour" box in the UTC Global Clock Preferences file; however,
I like having the old ship's bell sound on the hour but do not want it
transmitted. Unchecking the "Play Sounds via Core Audio" box in the
Edit Chimes panel had no effect. The chime was still being transmitted
on the hour.
After messing around with the OS X System Preferences Sounds panel,
I finally figured out what was wrong and fixed it. The problem was in
my OS X System Preferences/Sounds/Output settings. I had the USB
Audio CODEC selected (highlighted) rather than the Internal Speakers.
I changed the highlight (or selector) to the Internal Speakers and all is
now well. The old ship's bell chimes via the iMac's internal speakers
and is no longer being transmitted over the air.
There are no new rules on OS X just old rules we tend to forget until we
screwup and have something set wrong.
At least I was not transmitting the Windows startup sound that you
hear when Windows users reboot on digital frequencies. HiHi

Ps: The UTC Global Clock http://www.aquiladigital.us/utc/ is no longer
supported due to the developer's health. As a registered user, I continue
to use it to display UTC time just below the Spotlight in the OS X menu
bar. I keep the Mac on local time.
