Yes, there ARE other choices!
Where do you think the stability of Mac OSX comes from? Its FreeBSD foundation, of course!
You can run FreeBSD (or Linux) natively on that netbook and enjoy the same or better stability without ever having to touch something from microsoft.
There are plenty of ham applications for 'BSD and Linux - just listen to the "Linux in the Ham Shack" podcast for a taste.
