[Ham-Mac] EchoMac and Ports

All right, you guys are way over my head.

I have a Westell DSL modem which feeds my Apple computer.  When I open system preferences then open network, it is showing AirPort as on with a self-assigned IP.  

However on Status it says ON with the following note under it.  "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.93.208 and will not be able to connect to the internet."

Ethernet says it is connected.

Can you tell me, what am I missing ?  Keep it simple please, I'm not an Apple expert.

Your going to need a router/dsl modem ahead of the airport...had the  
same problem at home and at the studio...the airport will act as a  
"wireless access point" for any and all platforms and devices
