Hi Lew,

Have not tried to compile latest 1.9.4, but it you think if a Java
error you can adjust Mac OS X Java preferences to offer a particular
version of Java.

Inside Application/Utilities/Java you will find a Java Preferences
application. Running this allows you to adjust the order of the
various Java Runtime environment offered for compatibility.

Select restore defaults and give that a try. Otherwise you have to
play with the order to provide specific compatibility.

Not sure this is the issue.

Are you following these instructions? http://www.xastir.org/wiki/index.php/HowTo:Mac_OSX

I am not a Linux Guru either. Nor do I thing we all should be. :-)

It might be easier to install pre-compiled binary it's a slightly
older 1.8.1. version version.

Myself I am using the MacPorts method. As it takes care of all the
dependancies and compiles for me.
The version posted to MacPort repository is 1.8.4.
