[Ham-Mac] xastir compile problem

Greetings, all.

Is there anyone in the group who has successfully compiled xastir  
1.9.4 or other versions of xastir for running on Mac under OS X 10.5?

I have tried to compile 1.9.4, but get an error message,  
"_XmGetDefaultDisplay cannot be used prior to VendorS.Initialize,".

 From what I have gleaned online, this is due to a known problem in  
Java. But, I downloaded the most recent update  for Java (Update 2)  
and installed it, and that does not cure the problem.

I am NOT a Linux guru, so any help would be appreciated.
