[Ham-Mac] Stuck Audio Input Level slider using the USB Audio CODEC input

It's not just the SL.  I have the same problem with the line input on  
both my G4/350 PowerMac and my MacBookPro.  Although in my case the  
slider stays stuck at 0db.  To run cocoaModem I have to have the audio  
system preference open at the same time so I can adjust the input  
level there.  When I change modems it resets the input level to 50% so  
I have to re-adjust it in the preferences panel.
