Chris:

My son-in-law just had a similar experience with a different ending,
although him machine was still covered under Applecare.

He had a 17" iMac, and over the last eight months they replaced the
display, the logic board and the power supply. Al this was done at
the Apple store in Danbury, Connecticut. It developed another problem
and the fella on the Applecare line suggested he let them replace to
PS again. To this my replied, no I want another computer. Just what's
currently equivilent to what I have now. The CS guy said he'd get his
supervisor on the line. The super told him OK and two days later Dave
had a new 20" iMac.

I must say that, with my family, we have had nothing but excellent
experience with Apple's customer service and Applecare. Between the
three families we have a total of two iMacs, a G4 tower, four iBooks
and a MacBoook Pro. Everything that has needed to be done was taken
care of at an Apple store.

I'm sorry you have had a different experience, but I will say
AppleCare is money VERY well spent.
