Mac serial ports were always RS-422, which isn't a problem, the Mac 
modem cables were wired so that they worked fine with RS-232 devices.

No, this isn't hard. If you can't find a 8 to 9 pin cable, you can 
use an 8 to 25 pin cable along with a 25 to 9 pin cable. Or you could 
(gasp) wire up your own cable.
