[Ham-Mac] Serial Port w/Sleep Mode

Just curious, I suspect this is not a GUC232A issue,
specifically.
I had MacLoggerDX running with Telnet Cluster and
serial port control of the radio. I went to rest awhile,
(I was on the road all day yesterday doing some moving)
and when I came back, the eMac was asleep.
I awoke the eMac and the Telnet Cluster reconnected,
but I could not get the serial adapter to communicate
again even restarting MacLoggerDX. I reset the eMac
and all is well. I suspect that disconnecting and then
reconnecting the USB adapter would also have worked.
I guess I am curious of the protocol (so to speak) here?
I want to have my eMac on the Cluster for long periods
of time, even if I walk away, take a nap, whatever. So,
I guess I should make to not go asleep? Just screen saver?
This has probably been covered previously, sorry if so.
