[Ham-Mac] problem here

This just started on my G5 iMac and I'm just not sure what it is.
In a nutshell, when I put this iMac to sleep, the pulsating light
does not function at all, nor will the machine wake up. The fan will
boot and run at a god-awful speed. I then have to shut down by the
button on the back and reboot.
IF I boot up from my backup LaCie firewire drive, the machine
operates normally, sleeping and awaking on demand.
I use SuperDuper, and completely replaced the HD data with the backup
HD, so I think I can safely eliminate software from the equation.
I've zapped the PRAM and reset the open firmware, too.
I've done some research on the web, and some folks experiencing the
same issue claim the power supply is the problem. I tend to agree,
because the LaCie runs off its own PS. OR, maybe it's the HD itself.
I would appreciate any thoughts out there, from people I trust.
thanks in advance.
