Yes.  Be sure the mic is plugged in (and turned on if there's a switch.)

Go to System Preferences/sound/input.  You should be able to see the  
level meter move as you speak.

Now, one other possible problem:  Most (all?) Macs only accept "line"  
input.  Mic input is 30 dB less than that.  So if that mic doesn't  
output line level, you'll need a pre-amp.  I use a little adapter  
from Griffen.  I think it's called an i-Mic.
