Roger, Tim, am suspecting same thing. Just finished formatting a small 7 gig drive and installing OS X 10.3.9 on it so that can install it and test.

Was getting the following error message when running fsck on the machine yesterday:

IOATAController device blocking bus

and fsck repeatedly failed. Posted about this on the Apple discussions site, but no one has come up with a meaning for the message. Was hoping that would lead to either the drive or the logic board controller as the culprit before I spent a lot of time doing what I have done (preping another drive.)

If the temp replacement drive works, I'll put the old one in my FW drive case, connect it to my MDD machine and see if I can recover anything from it with the tools I have there. Will also order a new 100 mb drive for my daughter if the temp works okay. The computer has no problem booting from a CD or from an external FW drive.
