[Ham-Mac] New to EchoMac - Using the external mic?

Just got on with EchoMac today...pretty neat.  Am having a problem 
getting EchoMac to recognize an external mic here on my 
PowerBook....the external mic input is recognized and works fine with 
the "SKYPE" VoIP application but EchoMac seems to only want to 
recognize the internal mic even when selecting the external input 
source from the System Preferences Audio panel.  If I switch to the 
external mic in that panel there is no audio indicated at all on the 
level meter.

Any suggestions?
