Possible workaround...

If you have another Mac with a DVD drive you can use it to install.  
Just put the installation DVD in the second computer. Boot the second  
computer into target disk mode (Command-T) and then plug a firewire  
cable to first computer to second computer.

You should see the both second computers hard drive and installation  
DVD.  Then set the first computer to boot from the DVD.

It slower but works if you have the second Mac with a DVD drive.   
Nice thin about Macs is you can use one to fix another (Disk utility  
etc..) or use disks via firewire.
