Yes interesting topic!
Things changed fairly radically with 10.4 and cron tasks. Basically
cron is turned off in favor of a new launcd service. You should find
than in 10.4 you computer, if asleep, will wake up to perform
maintenance.
If you have added CRONTAB files to schedule things CRON will still run.

Also number one thing you can do to prevent disk corruption. UPS with
usb cable tied into your Mac. Unless you have an iBook or PowerBook
they have built-in UPS ;-)
