John,

You will find that many *nix applications require little more than:
./configure
make
make install
to compile and install software!

Lew has the right idea though, try to compile something that is well 
documented on your first try.  I also recommend installing X11 with 
Fink.  Fink will do all the hard stuff for you (compiling) for many 
applications/libraries and you can watch how it does it.

Finally, don't hesitate to ask questions.  But be advised you should 
read the documentation carefully before firing off emails.  Most of all 
have fun.  There is nothing like running that first program you 
compiled yourself!
