The short answer is it depends on the software and hardware you plan to use.

I have used a Keyspan USB-28X USB to Serial adapter to interface the old
(really old) AEA MacRATT software to work with a PK-232. I had to install
the OS9 driver because the MacRATT would only run in Classic mode. It worked
perfect for AX.25 and tcpip Packet.

You did not say if you are planning to use a TNC or a sound card. Sorry I
cannot offer more help.

What are you planning to do with packet?  It is only used for APRS
applications in this area. There may be some dedicated emergency comm links
using packet.
