Thanks for all of the replies about my slow powerbook.
Here is what I have done:
Run disk first aid and repaired the permissions.
Run MacJanitor
Run ClamXav. Too bad it won't let you scan the entire wolume.
Run Virex.
I don't know how to run top command (or actually do anything from the
command line, for that matter.)
I still need to run techtool.
I am running Activity Monitor with the little bar graph open all of
the time. This morning the bar went full scale and stayed there. The
mac went into slow motion. Opened the main window and something was
taking up all available processor capacity. A single process bounced
between about 71 and 82 percent, apparantly eating up all available
processor capacity because the bar was always full scale. Here are
the details.
Process ID: 1689
Process Name: sh
% CPU: floating between 71 and 82 %
parent process: cron 1688
I quit applications one at a time until the only thing running was
the Finder. "sh" responded by consuming the rest of the cpu
capacity. I restarted and it went away. I have tried to recreate
the situation but sh has yet to show up again, nor has the parent
process "cron 1688." I have opened everything I can remember having
open plus a bunch of other stuff including classic apps.
Anybody have a clue because I sure don't.
YIKES!
