Absolutely ! I use a very good piece of freeware every day - EchoMac by 
Steve Palm :)
A piece of freeware that I help to distribute and promote.
I think that the world is big enough for freeware and commercial 
software don't you ?

But seriously - how many people could afford to spend 40 to 50 hours a 
week, 50 weeks a year to a piece of software and not charge for it ?
