Dick -- for grins I just measured a spare Mac battery I have waiting in the
queue and it reads 3.69 V....my experience has been that you should be
holding data at 3.6 V for sure and probably a ways below that.  The ones
that have "failed" for me have been down in the low "2's" or even lower
which leads me to believe you have a problem not related to the battery
itself.  Have seen reports that the battery contacts have been problematic
on some machines.  Try cleaning up the terminals and ensure they have a good
"spring" to them and see what happens.  I assume your machine is using the
"half AA" type battery common to most of the older Macs?
