If you select to install the packages I mentioned, Fink will ask to 
install a bunch of other packages as well. Just say Yes if Fink 
Commander asks if you want to do that. This will also install the 
shlibs packages for most of the selected libraries.

This is already described in the README.MAPS file that is with the 
xastir distribution. Remeber that the /usr/local/xastir/maps directory 
for the "fink method" should be /sw/xastir/maps (this is also mentioned 
in the README file)

That's a difficult one because it depends on what you use. Mac with 
serial port or USB to Serial adapter (and what kind and on which USB 
port). I have a Keyspan USA-28 on the bottom USB port of my iBook and 
use /dev/cu.USA281P1.1
I even seem to remember that the port name changed after a software 
update. So this is something you need to experiment on.
