The funny characters on the Terminal may be due to the fink software 
trying to output localized text, but Terminal expects strings in UTF-8 
(unless you set the encoding to a different one in the window 
settings), but the localized text generated by the standard unix 
libraries apparently is in some other encoding.

Don't know about the missing files/packages, though...

But as Dennis suggested, get the FinkCommander - it makes life much 
easier unless you're a commandline junkie ;-)
