I'm running MacOS 9.04 on my wife's 7600/132. It runs fine.  The only 
problem is it really needs 64Mb RAM or more.  I run 8.6 on the kids 
6100/60 which also runs fine.

Basically as long as you have enough RAM you can run anything up to 9.1 
on any powermac.  9.2 and later require a machine capable of running 
MacOS X.

However, saying that I'd recommend you stay with 8.6 unless there is a 
pressing reason to upgrade further.
