I haven't used Windows 2000 with VPC but I'm running Windows 98 in 
VPC 5 and don't have any problem recognizing my USB device as a 
serial port in Windows.

In VPC Settings, make sure that USB is enabled. Then under Com1 (or 
Com2, wherever your port is located), make sure that the box labeled 
"Non-Modem Device" is checked.
