I found this from a 2004 posting to the OpenOffice
about printing postcards/qsl cards ... does this
sound like as elegant of a solution as possible or
is there a better way, please?

Here's what I would do:
Output your drawing as a jpg or png graphic.
Set up your page and insert that graphic four times as a link.
Select all four images, right-click and select 'graphics'.
Go to the 'size' tab and enter the width and height you want.
Position them where you want and set the anchor to 'page'.
Select them all again and set the order to 'back' and 'behind
text'.
Put your text in a frame with no background and no border.
Copy the frame three times and place on on each image.
If you use a generic name for the original image file,
you can replace it with a different image that's the same
size and it will be updated whenever you open the file.
