Hi Dave;
There are pre-compiled FLdigi binary's for Ubuntu so you should not need to
compile it, I never have. Just unzip the file place the binary in a folder
in your home dir and run it. I made a link on my task bar for it but thats
up to you
Try not to be so concerned with compiling software or doing things in the
command window. it's a lot easer then you think and it's FAST!
A lot of people are just not used to the command window but trust me in the
end it's much easer and faster then trying to explain navigating a bunch of
windows and tabs. It really does not get much easer then
"sudo apt-get update"
then
"sudo apt-get install XXX program"
I can usually have a program installed and up and running before most GUI
users could find it in the package manager.
It's really is not that hard, I had Fldigi and hamlib installed and running
in a few minutes it took me longer to build the interface. Jlog was a buger
and took about 5 min to install because I could not find the right directory
to install the optional Java files for rig control.
compiling software is generally a piece of cake. If you don't understand how
to do it thats fine as most of the time the authors or some user has posted
cut and paste commands
usually ./configure
then "make"
then "make install"
or something to that effect
But before that you need the tools to do it and thats simple as well
I believe the package is called build essentials.
first you update your database, So it would be
sudo apt-get update
then you install the program by chuting and pasting the following command
sudo apt-get install build-essential
while you are at it might as well install the header files so cut and paste
this command as well
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
All you need to do is cut and paste the commands into a bash window. Now So
you don't have to retype common commands The bash or command window has a
buffer just hit the up down arrow keys until you find the command you need.
By the way, this page will help. It has tons of the most common tasks. By
the time you finish this page you should have a full grasp on Ubuntu open it
and then add it to your favorates. then when you have time open it look
something you want to add and follow the instructions, start with easy stuff
first.
