Do you see a file just called "ax25" in /etc/init.d?

The "@" is not a part of the filename. It is a symbol that the
directory listing program, ls, uses as to indicate that the file is a
link, rather than being an actual file. You shouldn't find links in
/etc/init.d, you should see links in the various rcX.d directories.
Those links will point back to the original file in /etc/init.d.

Theoretically, you should be able to type "/etc/init.d/ax25 start" at
the root shell prompt to start up ax25.

"Why, it appears that we appointed all of our worst generals to
command the armies and we appointed all of our best generals to edit
the newspapers. I mean, I found by reading a newspaper that these
editor generals saw all of the defects plainly from the start but
didn't tell me until it was too late. I'm willing to yield my place
to these best generals and I'll do my best for the cause by editing a
newspaper." --Robert E. Lee
