Or DSL (Damn Small Linux) or some others.  Or most any of the Live-CD 
versions of Pick-One-You-Like.  But as Leif says, where is the equally 
"inexpensive" IQ hardware to connect to it?  Classic chicken and egg 
conundrum.

There was (and may be again) a kit in the QRP-L group that provides a RX 
only slice of 40M (+/- 23kHz) for about $30 I think.  Kit with no case 
and reasonable performance.  Well, for a first timer to get started 
with.  It is not lacking in sensitivity....handling super strong 
stations on contest weekend could become problematic.  But hey, for <$30 
just eat the free lunch and be happy ;-)
