Jonathan,
(Yes, I know I'm coming to this one late)
You might take a look at the Mandrake Multi-Network Firewall
distribution. It can be dl'ed off the Mandrake site. I know a coupe
folks that love it. Installing a full distro like RedHat is probably
not needed for a firewall. There are several small floppy images are
available ( Bering comes to mind ), but can be bit of trouble to get
setup if you've got less common hardware.
My personal practice is to keep the firewall clean. By that I mean the
firewall is a firewall/NAT and nothing more. I'll put another system
inside the FW to provide network services. Since I'm depending on that
firewall to keep my internal protected network safe I want it to have as
little running as possible.
All else being said it might be a better idea to go grab a cheap wired
network firewall from a chain store and save the more flexible linux box
for an internal network services box. You can probably pick one up for
$30 or less after rebates.
