There is a LINUX way to do this. The way I do it is to change to

the `package' directory, my distribution Slackware, says put all

optional user programs in /opt, then run midnight commander,
with ` mc [ENTER]'.

Tab to the (best for me, left) panel as required, enter cd {path to
your downloaded directory] on the second from the bottom line,
the right panel should still be in /opt.
Cursor down to the package you want to ung/bzip, press [ENTER] on it,
you should be setting on a directory (in the compressed file) with
the name of the package followed by it's version number.
Press F5, this will copy everything to: /opt/pgmnameVerNo
(such as /opt/ImageMagic-5.4.9 )
Tab over to the copy of the directory just created and press enter.
Cursor down to README, read it.
Cursor up to INSTALL (if present) and read it.
To compile, do as instructed by the INSTALL or the README file.
such as:
	./configure

		make

		make install

The new program should be runable now.
Press [ENTER] on the .. at the top, tab over and repeat.
Select a different .bz2 (or what ever) file and repeat.
This does not apply to RPM'ed releases.
(I press enter on a RPM'ed release and if it is OK I enter
" alien --to-tgz program.rpm " and it makes a gziped version
for me.)

A new version goes in a separate directory with the version number
on it (as a rule) and if the new version does not work or does
something so differently that you want to go back, all you have
to do is go into the older version directory and enter `make install'.
(that's why you should be reluctant to delete any that worked,
very quickly) If there are errors or requirements you can't satisfy,
just delete the directory in /opt, and keep the original, things change.

If you need more help contact me off line, be patient, I will get
to your E-mail in a day or two. I have 171 more to view tonight
if I don't fall asleep first. (I did last night.)
