None of these are actually window managers. They are login managers.  In
order (IIRC) they are for Gnome, KDE, and raw XFree86.

Window managers would be things like Sawfish, Enlightenment, FVWM2,
BlackBox, ICE, etc.  Of the bunch FVWM2, ICE, and BlackBox have smallish
resource footprints. I'm a gnome user so I'm not sure which of them is
best integrated (or possibly another one) with KDE.

KDE isn't a window manager.  Its an environment that runs on top of the
window manager. The two main contenders here are Gnome and KDE. You
don't absolutely have to have one or the other.  You can run without
one.

I can't help you much with this one. (I'm a RedHat user)  I'd guess it
will involve use of the Debian apt-get program.
