Dan,
I did a little web crawling on both the Adobe and MS sites and apparently
this is a not uncommon problem. Part of the fault is with Adobe. And part
with IE8. And to fix it, you have to do changes in both programs. In IE8
you need to disable the Acrobat Add-ons. Then in Adobe X or XI (either Editor
or Reader), you need to start that program, click Edit, click Preferences,
find and click Internet, and clear all of the checkmarks in the check boxes
on the page that comes up. Except the one named "Display in Read mode by
default" if you want to use the Reader instead of the Editor (which I don't).
Apparently, even if you disable the Add-ons in IE8, if the check boxes in
the Reader or the Editor are still checked, when called it tells IE8 to take
care of it and goes back to sleep. :-)
MS Word 2002 didn't have the problem.
I still haven't figured out how to get IrfanView working again.
