When I have to run Windows, I use Avira.  It's free.
To date, nothing has slipped past it.
I run Malwarebytes once a week (along with CCleaner).
To be fair, they have barely triggered at all.

Practice safe surfing:
Dump IE.
Turn off flash, javascript, and cookies (for privacy) where possible.
Stay out of `bad neighborhoods'.
Treat all email as suspicious.
