That's odd - I have always found what I'm looking for, even with legacy 
stuff.  Trying to get legacy parts is another story entirely.

Send me the model and I'll give it a second look.

While I heartily recommend linux, I'm guessing your problem is hardware.

Regardless, you can dl a `live' version of many different linuxes and 
run it only from the cd.  Distrowatch.com has ratings and comparisons.
I like Ubuntu (specifically Xubuntu).  Works well on older hardware as 
well as new.
