And if you set it up as IMAP (instead of POP3, not sure GMAIL will even do
that) then it will sync folders when connected and you can read, delete,
create emails off-line and it will sync and send emails next time you are

First, make sure whatever you do at hotspots, you use either a vpn or a
secure (https) connection.  Otherwise you're completely out in the open.

Isn't the gmail interface web-based?  My guess is that it would be 
slower.  I use Thunderbird as a rule (again, making sure I use the 
secure protocols for checking email - google is your friend). 
Thunderbird and its lighter cousins would be a better choice as they are 
fetching the mail only, as opposed to putting it up inside a web 
interface.  I'm not sure you'll see great speed improvements by using a 
lighter email client if the bottleneck is internet speed.
