First, make sure whatever you do at hotspots, you use either a vpn or a 
secure (https) connection.  Otherwise you're completely out in the open.

Isn't the gmail interface web-based?  My guess is that it would be 
slower.  I use Thunderbird as a rule (again, making sure I use the 
secure protocols for checking email - google is your friend). 
Thunderbird and its lighter cousins would be a better choice as they are 
fetching the mail only, as opposed to putting it up inside a web 
interface.  I'm not sure you'll see great speed improvements by using a 
lighter email client if the bottleneck is internet speed.
